I immediately fell in love with these pieces from Kate Spade Saturday’s holiday and resort collections. Bold statement necklaces, knit headpieces, and color blocking brought this collection to life. They’ve basically put together my holiday vacation packing list for me.
- watching dew-covered plants awaken as the morning fog gives way to sun
- coming home from a day at the office, picking perfectly ripe tomatoes or plums still warm from the afternoon sun, and eating them right on the spot!
It’s August and I’m loving it! I just took some nice garden pictures and I want to share them with you!
This summer, I even got some new garden-bed improvements that I’m so excited about. My husband made me the most wonderful tomato planter boxes complete with a permanent support structure and my pole beans will be easily harvested from inside my new bean tunnel – what a guy!!
Here’s some of what’s up in my summer garden right now.Â
Oh yeah, my summer garden is buzzing and producing. And, I’m in there all weekend long and as much as possible before and after work. Being a dermatologist, all this gardening has given me ample opportunity to master the challenge of functional sun protection and gardener’s hand care. See what I’ve learned to keep my skin healthy while I spend hours in the California sun with my hands in the soil. Click here to read my hand care post titled
Follow my sun-protection tips to protect your skin as the hours quickly pass as you busily tending your garden.
Dermatologist’s 5 Sun-Protection Tips for (Us) Gardeners:
Wear a broad brimmed hat.
Cover as much skin as possible with sun-protective clothing.
Keep the garden gloves on as much as possible to protect the backs of your hands, but use a tenacious water-resistant sunscreen, like Raw Elements, on the backs of your hands too because you know you’re going to take those gloves off for some gardening tasks. Â Be sure to reapply your sunscreen during the day too.
Cover what skin you can’t cover with one of my water-resistant zinc oxide sunscreens and reapply it every several hours. Personally, I use Citrix Sunscreen or Solbar Zinc Sunscreen and I carry the Raw Elements Eco Stick in my gardening overalls to reapply during the day.
As much as possible, try to plan your gardening tasks to follow the shade as the sun moves.
I’d love to hear what’s up in your garden this year! Â Happy gardening!

Life is good for La La Anthony. Actually, it’s fabulous. The former MTV veejay juggles acting jobs (she just finished filming Baggage Claim with Paula Patton), a reality show (La La’s Full Court Life), her makeup line (Motives for La La), and a family—and she does it all without having so much as a hair out of place. I’m not the only one to notice: She just teamed up with Caress as the skin-care brand’s newest ambassador, joining a group of women called Fabulistas. Anthony filled us in the one part of her beauty routine she never skips, her latest nail look, and more.
I recently went to a presentation of the Gucci 2014 resort collection, where we were given a demonstration on how their classic bamboo handles are made. A skilled Italian artisan—who spoke almost no English—took us through the steps. It takes hours to make a handle, which is individually hand-torched to achieve a color that suits the bag perfectly, then bent into shape and dried. Click through for more images of the process.
Backstage at fashion week, makeup artists use face charts to show their teams how to execute the look they’ve created. Well, it appears David Bowie used a similar method for his concerts. This is his own drawing, detailing one of his colorful Glam Rock–era makeup looks. My friend, London-based makeup artist Georgina Graham, spotted the sketch at the David Bowie Is exhibition currently showing at the Victoria & Albert Museum and sent it to me with the note, “What a man!” What a man indeed—just look at his contouring skills!
Beauty never sleeps, so neither do we. Keep up with Allure 24/7 on Instagram.
